Lifestyle - And What it means to Us.

LIFESTYLE A SOCIAL PERSPECTIVE

The typical way of life, of an individual, group or culture is lifestyle.  What is lifestyle?  A style of living that reflects the attitudes and values of a person or group.  Lifestyle means the way of living or things we do for our daily living.   It reflects the whole range of attitudes and social values of an individual.  Our lifestyle is the result of our cultural and behavioural pattern and lifelong personal habits.

The moulding of an individual’s lifestyle is influenced by the Social, cultural, Socioeconomic and technical system, in which he/she lives in.  Lifestyle is influenced by gender, age, ethnic/racial status, education, personality and psychological aspects. Lifestyles are acquired through social interaction with the family, with friends, with in peer group, with in the school and through mass media such as printed, audio-visual and digital media.

Attitude is a feeling, belief, or opinion of approval or disapproval towards something.  Many people take a person’s attitude as their behaviour. Although directly or indirectly they are interrelated, they are different in the sense that attitude represents how a person thinks or feels about someone or something. It has been said that ‘a person’s attitude affects thoughts while his/her behaviour affects actions.’ People hold complex relationships between attitudes and behaviour that are further complicated by the social factors influencing both.

Behaviour is an action or reaction that occurs in response to an event or their thoughts. Behaviours usually, but not always, reflect established beliefs and attitudes.   Behaviour can be influenced by a number of factors beyond attitude, including preconceptions about self and others, financial factors, social forces like what peers and community members are saying and doing.

Values reflect our sense of right and wrong. They help us grow and develop. They help us create ideal lifestyle. The decisions we make every day are a reflection of our values.  We learn most of our values from our parents and extended families. Our family values are influenced by our social and cultural values.

Technology has developed into an inevitable part of our everyday lives.  The development of new technologies helps to save lives by improving medicine, keeps us connected to each other, provides education and entertainment, it improves working style and makes the world better. In reality, technology has played a very important role in how we live in the world today and how we communicate with everything in and around us.

Over-usage of technology contribute to more serious health conditions, such as depression, damages to the brain systems connecting emotional processing, attention and decision-making. A new study revealed that Social media and mobile devices may lead to psychological and physical issues such as, anxiety, severe depression, suicide attempts and suicide, more significant impact on developing children and teenagers with the rise in use of smartphones, tablets and other devices.

An individual’s lifestyle is moulded and influenced by social forces like gender, age, ethnic/racial status, education, personality, psychological aspects, family, friends, peer group, school, economy and community.  The judicious usage of technology influences the lifestyle a person.  In the bottom line an individual decides what should be his/ her lifestyle which is transmitted across generation.
