 WELLNESS AND LIFESTYLE MANAGEMENT?

Wellness is a process of imparting knowledge and encouraging others to practice healthy habits in all dimensions of a person's life, including Social, Physical, Emotional, Occupational, Intellectual, Environmental and Spiritual well-being.   Wellness is the act of practicing healthy lifestyle in your day to day life to attain a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, instead of leading a life without disease and a weak physical and mental state.

Wellness is different from healthcare. Our healthcare systems uses a set of standard medical procedures to diagnose, treat and cure diseases, illness, injuries, physical and mental impairments in people.  In contrast, wellness is a proactive approach, focused on maintaining a healthy lifestyle that progress to optimal well-being. Ultimately, a solid foundation for wellness helps us prevent and overcome disease, both at present and in the future.

To understand the significance of wellness in an individual’s life, it’s important to understand how the different dimensions influence and mould the physical and mental health.  Wellness is a holistic, dynamic, continuous and balanced building up of the dimensions of wellness through the life of an individual. Wellness is not only physical health, it is a complete integration of physical, mental and social well-being.  It is a complex interaction that leads to quality of life.

One way to understand wellness is to know the relevance of different dimensions of wellness in an individual’s life.  The concepts and definitions of the different dimensions evolved with the evolution of mankind.  Ancient concept of health emphasizes that proper DIET, EXERCISE, SLEEP and Unity of mind and body is necessary for the healthy life and prevention of diseases.  In the middle ages, health perception was strongly influenced by SPIRITUALITY and MEDITATION also due to religion and church.  By the dawn of Industrial revolution FINANCIAL ABILITY became an influential element in healthy life.

The modern concept is a relative state in which, one is able to function well physically, mentally, socially, and spiritually and to perform maximum of one’s potentialities, within the social and natural environment in which one lives.

Each dimension plays a very important role in our wellness or quality of life, and each affects and overlaps the others. At times one may be more prominent than others, but neglect of any one dimension for any length of time has adverse effects on our overall well-being.

As discussed, different dimensions of wellness include: social interaction, exercise, nutrition, sleep and mindfulness. Each one has its influence in the well-being of your physical and mental health. In order to achieve wellness you do not have to make big changes in your lifestyle.  Take simple positive and healthy changes in your habits on a daily basis with each dimensions for achieving optimal wellness.
