Antioxidant Enzyme
Our body comprise of endogenous defense
mechanism to protect against free radical induced damages. The antioxidant enzymes – Superoxide
Dismutase (SOD), Glutathione Peroxidase, Catalases (CAT); metabolize oxidative toxic
intermediates. These enzymes also
require co-factors such as Selenium, Iron, Copper, Zinc and Manganese for
optimum catalytic activity.
The production of antioxidant enzymes in
the body is a complex process that is not yet totally understood.
Superoxide dismutase and Catalase; the two
antioxidant enzymes together constitute the most effective system of free
radical control mechanism in our body.
The oxygen free radical is also known as Superoxide. Superoxide free radicals are responsible for
the breakdown of Synovial fluid responsible for the lubrication of our joints;
leading to the inflammatory diseases like Arthritis, Bursitis and Gout.
The
main defense our body has against Superoxide is the enzyme known as Superoxide
dismutase (SOD). In the process of
removing Superoxide, SOD operates with another enzyme called Catalase
(CAT). When SOD breaks down Superoxide
into Oxygen and Hydrogen peroxide, the CAT removes Hydrogen peroxide, which can
cause cell damage and formation of more toxic free radicals.
Glutathione peroxidase is a Glutathione
enzyme, an important water soluble antioxidant, synthesized from amino acids,
Glycine, Glutamate and Cysteine. This
antioxidant consists of amino acid Glutathione peroxidase and the traces of
minerals Selenium. These two together
neutralizes free radical known as Peroxides.
Peroxides damage the cells by reacting
with the Lipid molecules in the cell membrane.
Glutathione peroxidase prevents the damage by removing the Lipid
peroxides. The main diseases caused by
peroxide free radicals are heart diseases, liver diseases, premature aging and
skin diseases. So Glutathione peroxidase
plays a major role in the cellular health by preventing the damage caused by
peroxide free radicals.
Antioxidant enzymes are absolutely
necessary for maintaining cellular and systemic health. Make it a point to consume antioxidant enzyme
