Homemade Dishes - Rasam

Rasam



A spicy liquid dish made of tamarind, tomatoes and certain spices; aids in digestion.

Ingredients

  • 2-3 tomatoes
  • 1 small lemon size tamarind
  • 3 pods garlic (mashed)

Rasam mix
  • 1 tsp  chilli powder
  • 2 tsp black pepper powder
  • 1 tsp fenugreek powder (uluva)
  •  ½ tsp cumin seed powder (jeera)
  • 2 tsp coriander powder
  •  ¼ tsp turmeric powder
  • A pinch asafetida

Seasoning
  • 2 dried red chillies
  • 1 tsp mustard seed
  • 2 stalks curry leaves
  • Oil as required
  • Salt as required

Preparation

Wash clean and cut the tomatoes into same sized pieces and set aside.  In quarter cup of water make tamarind pulp.  In a pan heat oil and temper the rasam mix items.   Add to the tempered rasam mix, mashed garlic, sliced tomatoes and salt to taste; sauté and add 2 cup of water and cook till tomatoes become soft. Add the tamarind pulp and boil the mix.

In the pan heat the oil and add the mustard seed, wait till it crackles.  Add the red chillies and curry leaves, temper it.  Add the seasonings into the rasam and heat it.  Yummy rasam is ready.  Go To KERALA FEAST
