Spirituality




Spirituality is not a religious belief or faith, it is an experience.  Spiritual experience can be based on the culture and belief one grows up or some unique experience, with or without religious belief or faith.

“Spirituality:
  • Is something everyone can experience
  • Helps us to find meaning and purpose in the things we value
  • Can bring hope in times of suffering and loss
  • Encourages us to seek the best relationship with ourselves, others and what lies beyond.”

Spiritual people have strong personal values and world views.  They have a more positive outlook and a better quality of life.

Spirituality boosts the self esteem and reduces anxiety and worries.  Generally people who do not have anxiety and worries tend to have healthy mind and physic.

Spiritual activity often brings meaning and purpose to one’s life, providing energy and motivation to go on in spite of adversities.  People who are spiritual are good in stress control because they have better coping mechanism and strong social support.  Studies show that people who have regular spiritual practice live longer.  Spiritual practice reduces the level of Interleukin (IL) 6, increased level of IL 6 leads to diseases.

Modern medical practitioners are attempting to balance health care by linking medicine with spirituality.  Spiritual care involves taking care of an individual physically, emotionally, socially and spiritually.

Several studies conducted by scientists showed that spiritual practice improves the personality of an individual.  Spiritually developed people are more social and have helping nature, their sense of selfishness reduces.

Spiritual practice develops the mental health and removes the negative mental state like – depression, anger, anxiety, envy and guilty feeling.  

Mentally healthy person:
  • Can understand his own ability and can work productively for oneself and for the community
  • Have a state of mental well-being, means how he/she carries himself as well as how he/she interact with the community
  • Have very good adaptability to the normal stresses of life
  • Have the absence of mental and behavioral disorders

Spirituality is the search for self actualization, a pursuit of ultimate reality, and for some others personal well-being and personality development, in short it is a unique experience depending on the individual.
