Homemade Dishes - Kaalan

Kaalan



Kaalan is a very thick, sour side dish made of curd, coconut, vegetables like raw banana or yam (chena).

Ingredients
  • 1 ½ cup curd
  • 1-2 raw bananas (Nendrakka)
  • 1 tsp black pepper powder
  • ½ tsp chilli powder
  • ½ tsp turmeric powder

Masala mix
  • ½ coconut grated
  • 1 tsp cumin seed powder
  • 2-3 green chillies

Seasonings
  • ¼ tsp mustard seed
  • 2 dried red chillies
  • 1 stalk curry leaves
  • Oil as required
  • Salt as required

Preparation

Peel, clean and wash the raw bananas; cut it to equal sized pieces.  Cook it with turmeric powder, black pepper powder and salt to taste.  Do not overcook the banana, dry out the water, mash it a little and set it aside.

Grind the masala mix and add the masala paste to the curd and mix well.  Add the curd masala mix to the cooked banana, mix well and warm the mix on low flame.

In a pan heat oil/ghee; add mustard seed, wait till it crackles.  Add curry leaves, dried red chillies and temper.  Add the seasoning to the curd masala mix, Kaalan is ready.  Go To KERALA FEAST
